A primary funding project of the foundation is the The Law Enforcement Career Path Academy. The Saint Paul Police Department launched the Law Enforcement Career Path Academy to ensure that young adults who aspire to serve as peace officers have the resources they need to achieve their dreams. The path to becoming an officer is not easy. LECPA helps chart that course.
Top candidates for the program complete a ten week training for free. Upon completion, each candidate receives five college credits towards a Law Enforcement Degree. Students who complete the entry-level training receive assistance enrolling in a two-year, industry-recognized Professional Peace Officer Education degree program. Students can earn while they learn. Students who successfully enroll in a degree program are eligible to engage in a year of service as AmeriCorps members. Service members will earn a living stipend and an educational award, volunteering in the field while studying to obtain required industry skills certificates to become peace officers.
LECPA recruits Saint Paul residents from all backgrounds and gives them the opportunity to become Saint Paul Police Officers. This program not only diversifies the workforce, but the officers policing Saint Paul are from the Saint Paul community.
“Officers are often called to help kids who are experiencing the worst moments of their lives. Shop with Cops gives them a chance to help kids in need without having to fix an immediate crisis. It also gives kids a chance to get to know the officer behind the badge. It’s a special event that’s as rewarding for our officers as it is for the kids.”
